I keep email notifications on as well. I like to know when there is a reply in a thread that I'm participating on.....and Jaiku emails have the reply text :)
@rubin, @jezlyn: Yep, yep. Email notifs are especially useful if you're a gmail addict like me. Once you've set up your filters, all you have to do get the messages out of the inbox is to archive them with the 'y' keyboard shortcut.
@jezlyn: Ok, so you can do filtering and archiving too without extra effort, that's true. It's a matter of preference, really. If you have a whole lot of friends (and thus an order of magnitude more updates than I do, *sniff*), it may be easier to watch the Jaiku gmail label separately.

I add people whom I want to follow. I don't necessarily believe everyone who wants to follow me is someone I want to follow, until I've seen some of their replies. That's why my contact list is driven by "interesting postings", not just "mutual admiration".
Now I just need to determine what is interesting so I can make people's contact lists.

"Internet fame" can have its drawbacks. Back in the day, I hosted an advanced darkroom technique forum on Compuserve and was also running a live Q@A chat on the same forum on Thursdays. At one point I was receiving phone calls at 3:00A.M. from Australia from people wanting to know how to modifiy a developer formula. Needless to say, I chose to make a quick withdrawl from the "fame". Now there are beter ways to leverage your "fame", and get some compensation for your knowledge.:)
